Acceleration toward the One Looming Thing

He-who-must-not-be-named called in the midst of baking cookies with Jack (as Kyle crashed on the bed)... I figured I needed to take the call as Lisa was in a meeting and I didn't want her disturbed again.

He needs me to go over the location of bathroom bars with Josef tomorrow morning. Then he began the litany of things that were done: all of upstairs (bathroom fixtures, toilet, showers, all tested); kitchen appliances installed, tested and working; water heater tested and working; stucco repaired. I let him go on, punctuated with as many quasi-enthusiastic "great" or "good" as I could muster. At the end of his list, he detailed the clean-up, and said that the only thing that remained were the rails, which will take place Wednesday... (it'll be really interesting Friday morning then... today a stair company returned my call from the weekend, and scheduled an estimate visit Friday morning).

I asked about the skylight, roof shingles and fire sprinkler supply lines... oh, yeah... those... those still need to be done. When I asked about the skylight, and its disappearance--since he has said three weeks ago that it was in and now it's not--he continued on his Sgt. Schultz routine of "I know nothing."... or in this case, "I don't understand it, either." Whatever. I reminded him about the roof shingles and his promise of three weeks ago that it would be "taken care of."... and he said that it would. Like I have so much faith in his word now. The fire sprinkler guy is supposed to be there either tomorrow or Thursday.

He-who-must-not-be-named then said that the final inspection will take place on Wednesday, or Friday at the latest.

I'd laugh, but that would be rude. There's no fucking WAY inspection will take place (or rather pass) Wednesday, without a check of the fire sprinklers (if the guy shows Thursday), or the installation of upstairs exterior deck rails or the stair rails... and I would think the lack of a skylight would be problematic as well... but maybe the whole inspection thing is just a rubber-stamp (though I'm dying to see what happens with the garaged/laundry door thing).

Anyway, I digress. He then says he'll be out of the state for the next three days and will return Thursday night and will be at the worksite Friday morning (making that stair estimate even MORE fun)... the shower door guys will be there, too. So it should shape up to be a heck of a week... we'll see how it turns out.

Maybe all this HECK-tic-ness will distract me from the one looming thing: Thursday is the one-year anniversary of mom's passing. I'm already a little funky (I'm pretty convinced that my illness of the weekend and today--I didn't get out of bed until 9 this morning--is at least partly due to the fact that it's pretty typical for my to physically manifest emotional stress). So may be all of this will be a euphoric and ecstatic diversion from the event that was the impetus for us to start this whole endeavor in the first place.

And maybe monkeys will fly out of my ass.
